"We trust that the magic of sound will contribute an ever greater measure to the relief of human suffering." Robert Assagioli, MD
It has been found that musical vibrations make their impact upon the entire body, being picked up by the nerves, spinal column, and even by the bones. Music affects the pulse, respiration, and blood pressure; but it’s deepest effects, and those from which most of its curative properties are derived, are mental and emotional.
We are constantly being vibrated on a cellular level by heard and unheard sound frequencies. Sound vibrations have a tremendous influence over human functionality as sound touches and influences our emotions like no other source of input or expression. Sound therapy has been utilized in various cultures for thousands of years as a tool for maintaining overall health. Whether through the use of mantras as with the Hindus, the Icaros (medicine melodies) of various Indigenous peoples from Central and South America, or Pythagoras' use of interval and frequency.
These various techniques all have the same intention: to move us from a place of imbalance to a place of balance, relaxation, peace, and harmony. Our body, mind, and spirit always want to be moving in a direction toward equilibrium, yet we often have too much outer stimulus and noise, and not enough time to dedicate to ourselves, which can prevent us from achieving deep levels of relaxation, balance, and overall well-being. Sound helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state by using entrainment. This same concept is utilized in meditation by regulating the breath, but with Monochord Therapy, it's the sound and vibration that influences the shift.
A Monochord session is offered to a fully clothed recipient who is comfortably lying on a therapy table. By placing the instrument directly on the body, a practitioner can engage with clients both physically and aurally. The ambient rolling waves of sound lull the recipient into deep relaxation, while the subtle vibrations offer a gentle “massage” to the cellular tissues of the body. Because the Monochord is doing most of the physical work, contact is kept to an absolute minimum. This form of bodywork is much less physically intrusive than a traditional hands-on massage and most recipients will start to relax as soon as the session begins. The instrument quickly eases us into a nurturing state of mindfulness and well-being. Results vary of course, but Monochord Therapy has profound effects on the body and mind. The modality is above all a method of complete relaxation, and most recipients will reach this state quite quickly, even during their first session.
During a session, the body will go through noticeable changes as it responds to deeper states of rest. Muscles lose tension within the first minutes and breathing and heart rates start to slow down as the body begins to absorb the waves of vibration into its tissue. The slowing of breathing and lack of muscle tension are both signs that the metabolism is slowing. Insulin levels rise and cortisol levels fall. As the heart rate slows and blood pressure falls the arteries expand giving rise to a feeling of warmth. This relaxed state supports the body's ability to naturally repair itself instead of responding to outside concerns; science clearly shows that the immune system is at its best when we are relaxed. Monochord Therapy is so gentle and nurturing that almost all recipients will fall asleep at some point during the session. Relaxation is not only a physical state but also a state of consciousness, and this form of sound therapy has very strong effects on alertness and perception. A session brings on the same kind of brain states as yoga, Tai chi, and meditation.
Some of the additional benefits of Monochord Therapy can include:
• Deep relaxation and meditative states
• Reduction of stress and anxiety
• Lessening feelings of anger and fear
• Increased feelings of happiness, joy, and tranquility
• Ease of chronic pain and inflammation
• Improvement of the human immune function
• Lowering of heart rate and blood pressure
• Stimulation of deeper sleep
• Reduction in chronic fatigue syndrome and depression
• Increased mental and emotional clarity
• Support in working through past physical and emotional traumas
Clients who experience a deep state of relaxation through Monochord Therapy often report a feeling of mental freshness that they carry with them after the session is over. Relaxation and meditative states of mind have also been shown to increase the threshold for emotional response, meaning they can help us manage our emotional reactions to outside influences. Like other kinds of meditation, this can help us be more internally aware while being more present in the moment and connected with our surroundings. (Note: regretfully, Monochord Therapy is not suitable for clients with pacemakers.)
