Questions & Answers

VIBRATIONAL SOUND THERAPY

Whom should I see?

To make sure that you have the best possible experience, I encourage you to take the time to find and choose a Licensed Vibrational Sound Therapist with whom you feel comfortable and meets your standards.  You'll want someone who clearly describes the process and how he or she structures the session so you have an idea of what to expect. Your actual experience of the session is very subjective, but knowing what the therapist will do next will help you relax into his or her care.

Please know that I am a licensed, insured, and registered with the Vibrational Sound Therapy Association (VSA). As a therapist, I comply with the Vibrational Sound Therapy Code of Conduct required by the VSA. I am extremely proud of my licensure and the work that it took to earn these professional credentials. It allows me to show my clients that I operate at the highest of standards!

Is there an intake process?

Yes. I will ask you to fill out a short intake and consent form before receiving your session. I will then review the information you have noted and will then discuss any special needs, accommodations, or areas of concern you would like to bring to my attention before the session starts. If this is your first visit, you can print and fill out the Gentle Earth Intake Form and bring it with you to save time before our session begins. If this is not convenient, no worries, I have plenty on hand. This will be our first order of business before we get to the really good stuff!

What can I expect from a session?

When you join me in my studio, you can expect to enter a safe space of unconditional love without judgment. I allow for as much time to talk and discuss as you need. I will thoroughly explain the flow of the session, show you the therapy bowls I will work with, and give you an opportunity to share any needs or accommodations you would like implemented during our time together. When we begin the session, you will lie fully clothed on a therapy table with organic sheets and blankets that can be heated to your comfort level. I also have a range of soft bolsters that can be placed under your knees to support your back and legs. Your job is to relax, breath, and allow - allow yourself to experience whatever it is you need at this moment.

What should I do to prepare for the session?

Please hydrate well the day before our scheduled appointment. Plan to arrive in relaxed, loose-fitting clothing and use the restroom before your session so that you are able to lie/sit down comfortably. If you are wearing a belt, earrings, or long jewelry, I may have you remove them prior to when we begin.  If this is your first visit, you can print and fill out the Gentle Earth Intake Form and bring it with you to save time before our session begins.

As a client, what is my role during the session?

Prior to the session, feel free to ask me any additional questions about the therapy bowls and how they will be used on and around your body. During the session, I invite you to make yourself extremely comfortable and just settle into the sound, rhythm, and vibration of the bowls.  Most clients enjoy using the eye pillow I offer, but you may feel more comfortable just keeping your eyes lightly closed and relaxed. I will be moving about during our time together gently placing, striking, and removing the therapy bowls. It is always my sincere intention to do this as quietly as possible with little to no distraction to you.

If you can settle into a quiet meditative state while your session unfolds this too can greatly enhance your overall experience. Please know that I will softly communicate with you during the session if I need you to roll over or adjust your body placement, such as moving your feet or lifting your arm. If at any time you begin to feel uncomfortable during your session with how you are laying, you are welcome, and encouraged, to adjust YOUR body as needed. Additionally, if a bowl starts to feels too heavy, or the vibration feels too strong, please let me know immediately so that I can adjust to your individual needs. I want you to feel extremely comfortable and relaxed during our time together and this session is all about YOU!

What will I experience as the therapy bowls are placed around and on my body?

Vibrational Sound Therapy (VST) combines powerful vibration and tones to induce an immediate relaxed state. The introduction of the sound waves directly into the body, along with soothing ambient tones, is such a strong treatment that clients report effects ranging from a meditative state to deep relaxation. During a session, the body will go through noticeable changes as it responds to deeper states of rest. Relaxation during a VST session brings the same kind of mental state as yoga, Tai Chi, and meditation. Muscles will lose tension, and one may even start to slip into the alpha brain wave pattern. The alpha wave pattern is associated with daydreaming and pre-sleep. Breathing and heart rate will begin to slow down, and the body will begin to absorb the waves into its tissues. This relaxed state allows the body to repair itself instead of responding to outside concerns. The immune system is at its best when in a state of relaxation.

VSTis both a passive and participatory experience. The passive aspect is that you become more relaxed by laying down and slowing your breath. By doing this, you prepare yourself to become the receiver of sound. It's in this place of stillness that you participate by becoming more open and aware of each sound that comes in. Sound helps create the pathway to this place of stillness the same as a mantra helps you to arrive at the still point of meditation.

What happens after the session?

Most people feel extremely relaxed, sometimes even euphoric. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since metabolical wastes are released from your soft tissues during a VST session, it is recommended you drink plenty of water afterward.

What are the benefits of Vibrational Sound Therapy?

Sound Therapy can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, and reduce blood pressure. VST is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety, and create an overall sense of well-being.

How frequently should I receive Vibrational Sound Therapy?

There is no set guide to how often someone should receive sound therapy but a good practice of bi-weekly or even monthly can contribute to an overall improvement in health.

What form of payments are accepted for sessions?

I currently accept checks, cash, most forms of credit cards (Visa, Master Charge, American Express, Discover), debit cards (processed like credit), and valid gift certificates. Payment is due when services are scheduled.

What if I cannot keep my scheduled appointment or I am running late for our session?

I understand that unforeseen events happen occasionally in everyone’s life. With that said, all I ask of my clients is to contact me within a reasonable time prior to their appointment if a situation arises and we need to reschedule or cancel. In my desire to be effective and fair to all clients, I feel the need insist the following policies are honored and respected:

24-hour advance notice (when possible) is appreciated when canceling an appointment. This allows the opportunity for someone else to schedule an appointment in your place. If you are unable to give a 24 hours advance notice and cancel within less of a time window, you will be charged for 50% of your scheduled appointment cost. This is to compensate my time waiting and not being able to fill the appointment in such a short time period.  NOTE: If you have a gift certificate and do not contact me within 24 hours to cancel (phone call, text, or e-mail will do), your gift card will be redeemed as payment.

No-shows

Clients who either forget or consciously choose to forgo their appointment for whatever reason without calling me to cancel will be considered a “no-show.” They will be charged a $50 no-show fee for their  60-minute “missed” appointment or a $25 no-show fee for their 30-minute "missed" appointment; whichever applies. Two no-shows and I respectfully refuse the right to rebook your appointment.

Late Arrivals

If you arrive late, your session may be shortened in order to accommodate others whose appointments follow yours. Unless you call me and give me a heads up on your ETA, I will wait 20 minutes into your appointment time. After 20 minutes, your appointment will be canceled. Regardless of the length of the treatment actually given, charges for the “full” session will stand.  Out of respect and consideration for me and other clients, please plan accordingly and be on time.

SOUND BATH & GONG IMMERSION

Are Sound Bath and Gong Immersions a form of entertainment?

If shared in the truest form, they should not be. Sound Bath and Gong Immersion practitioners are not performers. Rather, they work to utilize various instruments as tools to facilitate a shift in the participant's consciousness. When properly executed, the result is a slowdown of your brainwaves, shifting from a more active state (beta) to a more relaxed dreamlike state (alpha).

This experience is not a concert in the way a traditional music concert requires your attention and observation. Sound Bath and Gong Immersions strip away the condensed structural elements that music has such as rhythm, arrangement, and performance. It's not about analyzing any of these elements; it is facilitation into a deeper state and an opportunity to unplug from this hyperactive reality to gain perspective with what's going on within you. And if you enter a this experience with the intent of analyzing what instruments are creating the sounds, it could ultimately take longer for you to settle into that relaxed state.

Do participants react differently to sound and vibration?

Our body, mind, and spirit hold the energetic imprints of all of our experiences, and sound vibrations have a way of shaking things up. Because of this, Sound Bath and Gong Immersions can induce a sense of bliss, remarkable peace one minute, and a feeling of unease the next. If these emotions do arise, it's happening because the environment is promoting a release, so just breath through it rather than letting yourself be submerged it. Bring your attention to the rhythm of your breathing. Tune into your deep inhales and deep exhales.

Are all Sound Bath and Gong Immersions created equally?

Unfortunately no. This experience can be very powerful, so you should make sure that any facilitator you visit has studied sound therapy. Even though some musicians and DJs might have the best intentions when they use phrases like "sound healing" or "sound bath" to promote their events, it's extremely important to understand that facilitating such a profound experience should not be about an individuals’ desire to express themselves to an audience. A good facilitator knows how to relinquish the notion of self in favor of serving the community in a selfless way.  A well-studied facilitator knows how to create and hold a safe space while introducing the power of sound.

Please know that I am a licensed, insured, and registered practitioner with the Vibrational Sound Therapy Association (VSA). As a Vibrational Sound Therapist, it is a membership that I am extremely proud of and allows me to show my guests that I operate at very high standards!

Do I need to know how to meditate before participating in a Sound Bath or Gong Immersion?

Absolutely not! What's so remarkable about these beautiful offerings is that even first-timers can accrue their benefits. After all, everyone has a relationship with sound. The sound is immediate and it has a way of having a direct impact on our whole being. Not to mention, Sound Bath and Gong Immersions don't require the discipline that meditation does. You do not have to be a well-practiced yogi or self-care practitioner in order to have a profound and positive experience with sound. In fact, a Sound Bath or Gong Immersion can serve as a gateway to these practices by introducing you to what it feels like when calmness enters the mind.

How do I get the most out of this holistic modality?

Participating in a Sound Bath meditation is a great way to quiet the mind, and considering how overstimulated we can be, regularly introducing a calming experience can definitely have a positive effect on our well-being. Each experience with sound will differ depending on your feelings and surroundings, and each new experience will teach you more about yourself. Sometimes you might have a visual experience, and other times it may affect the way you feel emotionally, or even distort your perception of time. All of these contribute to your personal growth and balance in body, mind, and spirit so establishing a regular practice can be extremely beneficial.

USUI REIKI

Tell me about the meaning of the word.

Reiki is made of two Japanese words:

“Rei” – Meaning mysterious, transcendental spirit. The Soul. The Sacred. Divine wisdom.

“Ki” – Light and energy, something unseen, atmosphere, vital energy, vapor. Breath. The energy of the entire universe.

Reiki is "spiritually guided life force energy." It reaches the whole person including the body, mind, and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well being. Reiki exists in all things; we are Reiki. It is the ‘Universal Life Force’ that surrounds and sustains us all.

Is Reiki a religion?

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to use Reiki. In fact, it is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. While Reiki is not a religion, it still empowers us to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Reiki is founded on five daily principals:

Just for today, I will not worry.

Just for today, I will not be angry.

Just for today, I will be grateful.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

How should I select a practitioner?

To make sure that you have the best possible experience, I encourage you to take the time to find and choose a practitioner with whom you feel comfortable and who meets your standards. You'll want someone who clearly describes the process and how he or she structures the session so you have an idea of what to expect. Your actual experience of the session is very subjective, but knowing what the practitioner will do next will help you relax into his or her care.

Please know that I am a certified, insured, and registered practitioner with the Shibumi International Reiki Association. As a Usui Reiki Master, I uphold the vision, mission, and philosophy of Shibumi and adhere to their Codes of Practice and Ethics. It is a membership that I am extremely proud of!

Is there an intake form?

Yes. As a practitioner, I will ask you to fill out a short intake and consent form before receiving your session. I will explain the process, and ask if you have any specific needs. Be sure to let me know if you have a health condition that might impact your lying flat either on your back or front or if you have any areas that are sensitive to extremely light touch. For those who are touch-sensitive, Reiki can be performed without physical touch.  I will always ask your preference though before we begin any session. If this is your first visit, you can print and fill out the Gentle Earth Intake Form and bring it with you to save time before our session begins. If this is not convenient, no worries, I have plenty on hand. This will be our first order of business before we get to the really good stuff!

What is the setting?

A peaceful place is preferable, such as in my studio, but Reiki can be done anywhere, no matter what else is happening either around or directly to the recipient. A peaceful setting where you are not disturbed, however, is always desirable. When you join me in my studio, you can expect to enter a safe space of unconditional love without judgment. I allow for as much time to talk and discuss as you need. I will thoroughly explain the flow of the session, show you the hand positions I will be using, and give you an opportunity to share any needs or accommodations you would like implemented during our time together. When we begin the session, you will lie fully clothed on a bodywork table with organic sheets and blankets that can be heated to your comfort level. I also have a range of soft bolsters that can be placed under your knees to support your back and legs. Your job is to relax, breath, and allow - allow yourself to experience whatever it is you need at this moment. I frequently play soft music during the session as a way of masking ambient noise, but let me know if you prefer silence.

What should I do to prepare for the session?

Please arrive in relaxed loose-fitting clothing and use the restroom before your session so that you are able to lie/sit down comfortably. If you are wearing a belt, earrings, or long jewelry, I may have you remove them prior to when we begin. If this is your first visit, you can print and fill out the Gentle Earth Intake Form and bring it with you to save time before our session begins.

As a client, what is my role during the session?

Prior to the session, feel free to ask me any additional questions about Reiki and the placement of my hands on and around your body. During the session, I invite you to make yourself extremely comfortable and just settle into the peaceful atmosphere and ambient sounds. Most clients enjoy using the eye pillow I offer, but you may feel more comfortable just keeping your eyes lightly closed and relaxed. I will be moving about during our time together and it is always my sincere intention to do this as quietly as possible with little to no distraction to you. Receiving Reiki is a wonderfully passive experience. Don't try to relax, just let the Reiki relax you. Your state will shift quite naturally as the session proceeds. Meanwhile feel free to daydream, enjoy the music, or simply observe your breath. Please know that I will softly communicate with you during the session if I need you to adjust your body position, such as to roll over. If at any time you begin to feel uncomfortable during your session with how you are laying, you are welcome and encouraged to adjust YOUR body as needed. I want you to feel extremely comfortable and relaxed during our time together and this session is all about YOU!

What might I experience?

"I feel very refreshed and seem to be thinking more clearly." "I think I fell asleep." "I can't believe how hot your hands got!" "I feel more relaxed than even after a massage." "My headache is gone." These are some of the things people typically say after a Reiki session. The experience of Reiki is subjective, changeable, and sometimes very subtle. People often experience heat in the practitioner's hands, but sometimes the practitioner's hands feel refreshingly cool. Other common experiences are subtle pulsations where the practitioner's hands are placed or cascading waves of pulsations throughout the body.

People often comment on how comforting they find the experience of Reiki to be. An interesting study reported that recipients frequently feel that they are hovering in a threshold state of consciousness, simultaneously aware of their surroundings and deeply indrawn. Some people fall into a deep, sleep-like meditative state. Sometimes the experience of Reiki is dramatic, while for other people, the first session, in particular, may be uneventful, although they feel somehow better afterward. The most common experience is an almost immediate release of stress and a feeling of deep relaxation.

Tell me about distance (remote) sessions.

Reiki can be given remotely. Distance sessions are an energetic process that can be best explained through the principles of Quantum physics. It has been proven to be extremely effective, sometimes even more effective than local, hands-on support. Quantum physics shows us that everything is made up of energy, and everything is connected. Everything is part of the same, continuous whole. Long-distance healing is “wireless” healing. We accept that cell phones, televisions, and even our garage door openers work in this wireless way. It’s not much of a leap to accept that all energy travels that way, including the energy of Reiki.

Recipients of distance sessions report the same sensations as recipients of the hands-on experience, such as a sense of heat or tingling in certain parts of the body, a sense of calm and peace, and a deep sense of relaxation.

What happens after the session?

You are welcome to ask any questions you may have after our time together is finished, but I will not give you any type of diagnosis or offer you a "physic reading," as that is not part of Reiki. You will want to drink plenty of water after your session and try to limit heavy activity for the next few hours. Although people typically leave a Reiki session feeling refreshed, sometimes they notice feeling a little more tired in the evening than usual. This is not viewed as an adverse reaction, but rather as the body's natural response, something to be heeded.

How frequently should I schedule a Reiki session?

There is no set guide to how often someone should receive Reiki but a good practice of bi-weekly or even monthly can contribute to overall balance in mind, body, and spirit. Remember, you needn't have something “wrong” with you to benefit from a Reiki session. Wherever you are, you can plug into a source that replenishes you with deep love, grace, and peace.

What form of payments are accepted for sessions?

I currently accept checks, cash, most forms of credit cards (Visa, Master Charge, American Express, Discover), debit cards (processed like credit), and valid gift certificates. Payment is due when services are rendered.
