Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls
Everything in life is vibration.
Piezoelectricity is a unique property of quartz that causes it to vibrate at a precise frequency. When a mechanical force such as pressure is applied to quartz, it causes the material to convert mechanical energy into electricity. It is these precise vibrations that gave way to the invention of many modern timekeeping and broadcasting devices, beginning with the invention of the Quartz crystal oscillator in 1918. Significant to the genesis of quartz singing bowls is, like quartz, our bodies possess piezoelectricity.
Our bodies, like the crystal oscillator in a watch, can be altered mechanically and discharge electric pulses. When a quartz singing bowl is played, the vibrations (and/or energy created) hit our bodies and create resonance. According to physics, resonance is the reinforcement of sound by reflection from a surface or by the synchronous vibration of a neighboring object. With this definition in hand, it can be said that when two energy systems encounter each other (quartz and our bodies), the two vibrations come into the state of harmonic vibration.
It is the discovery of resonance between quartz and our bodies that led the quartz crystal singing bowl into the hands of sound therapists and holistic practitioners. The vibration of a quartz crystal singing bowl can be scientifically defined as a sine wave. A sine wave is a pure tone that is repeated over and over again to produce a frequency. The quartz crystal singing bowl is the only musical instrument that can produce a sine wave.
Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls are made from 99.9 percent pure quartz crystal; a naturally occurring element. The crystal is placed in a mold and heated to 4000 degrees. Because our bodies are also composed of a crystalline structure, using Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls for meditation allows us to respond more quickly and favorably to the sound as therapy. This is why crystals are a key element in many different holistic practices.
Science has begun to successfully prove that body functions can be altered by the use of sound waves giving us strong evidence supporting the use of Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls. In fact, there are doctors currently using Himalayan Singing Bowls and Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls for sound and music therapy to help terminally ill patients deal with pain. The sound of the bowls can stimulate deep into the body tissues which allows doctors to promote well-being from within. The calming musical tones help to heal by reinstating the natural sense of balance and harmony.
When the body is suffering from a physical ailment, the natural resonant frequency of sound that is produced by the body is reduced, creating an imbalance. With crystal and Himalayan singing bowls, sounding the tone of the bowls can restore balance by projecting the sound into the body which helps to return the body to a healthy resonant frequency. While there have been studies done on this type of sound therapy, it is still in the early stages and is not recommended as a full health care regime. It is important that you still visit your doctor for treatment if you suspect any sort of health problem.
The most common quartz crystal singing bowls are frosted. Due to their size and thickness, frosted singing bowls are louder and create more vibration than clear crystal and fusion bowls. Clear quartz crystal singing bowls, which are generally smaller and more fragile, are usually more difficult to play than their frosted siblings. Clear handled bowls are used by sound practitioners because of their ability to direct tones into the human body.
